Have you ever wondered how you make decisions in your life? Think about all the choices you make. What you start, and what you finish. Likewise, who you are, what you think, what you say, what you feel, where you go and how you behave. Have you ever really sat back and wondered how you came to these outcomes? Because, when you really think about it, the most powerful decisions you’ll ever make in life are not always about what you begin. Sometimes, the most powerful decisions are about what you choose to end.
I speak here from experience. Honestly, looking back at parts of my own life, the things I had the courage to stop, release, walk away from, or finally let go of were some of the best decisions I ever made.
We often view life transformations as starting a massive new challenge. Becoming phenomenal. Fabulous. Successful. Reinvented. But sometimes, sometimes the real transformation comes from just deciding that enough is enough.
Powerful Decisions Require Letting Go

Here’s the truth. Endings can feel painful. That’s because the brain likes certainty. It likes familiarity. It likes patterns and routines, even when they are making us unhappy. Indeed, an article on the Biology Insights website notes that a small structure deep in your brain, the amygdala, is responsible for processing emotions, particularly fear. Additionally, it responds to unpredictability. That’s why so many people hold on to things long after they stop serving them, because change, even if it is positive, can be a source of anxiety.
This explains why we:
- Hold on to relationships that drain us.
- Stay in jobs we can’t stand.
- Continue with habits that keep us stuck.
- Continue with old versions of ourselves.
We even hold on to money, sitting untouched in a bank account, ‘just in case’ we need it for a rainy day. Hands up if you keep clothes you’ll probably never wear again, because maybe one day you’ll fit into them? Who has a pair of ridiculously high heels put away for a wedding outfit that may never happen?
We hold onto clutter, emotionally and physically, because part of us fears that if we let go, we might lose control. That’s why one of the most powerful decisions you will ever make is recognising when something no longer belongs in your life.
Why Do We Stay Stuck In Our Lives?
So many people are exhausted, overwhelmed, and frustrated, not because they lack ambition, but because they’re carrying too much emotionally. They have too many unresolved decisions, too many fears, too many old stories, and too many things they should have let go of years ago.
Stress experts at the National Institutes of Health (NCCIH) explain that chronic stress affects both the mind and body, especially when people stay trapped in situations that no longer feel safe or aligned. (NCCIH)
And sometimes that stress shows up in ways we don’t even recognise:
- Procrastination.
- Overthinking.
- People pleasing.
- Low confidence.
- Emotional exhaustion.
Even physical clutter can affect mental wellbeing. Experts increasingly link disorganised environments with increased stress, overwhelm, and cognitive load. ‘The presence of clutter can overstimulate the brain, making it difficult to concentrate, relax, or process information efficiently.’ (Elegant Homes)
Literally, everything you hold onto takes energy. That’s why making powerful decisions about what to release can completely change your life.
What Could You Replace It With?

Here’s the interesting part. Most people focus so much on what they’re afraid to lose that they never stop to think about what they could gain.
What if you gave your dream some space to grow?
What if, instead of worrying all day about what might happen if you let go, you started thinking about what you could replace those things with? More joy, peace, and love? More confidence, freedom, and purpose, maybe?
That’s where the magic starts. One of the most powerful decisions you can make is deciding not to settle for a life that no longer feels right.
The Most Powerful Decisions Create Space
The universe, life, energy, call it what you want, cannot really bring new things into your life when you are gripping tightly to old things. What do I mean by this? Think of the saying, ‘ When one door closes, another one opens.’ It’s true. When you clear out emotional clutter, physical clutter, or mental clutter, you create space.
What can the space lead to?
- Opportunities
- Better relationships
- Joy
- Money
- Growth
Some people spend years saying the same things every day:
“I’m tired.”
“I hate my job.”
“Nothing ever changes.”
“What’s the point?”
Eventually, the moaning becomes part of their identity. That’s not the way to enjoy life. The women I work with know there is so much more available to them than just surviving. They know they can experience:
- Fulfilment
- Purpose
- Excitement
- Connection
- Confidence
They wake up excited about life, instead of dreading another day of repeating the same tired patterns. Often, that breakthrough comes from making one of those deeply powerful decisions.
Powerful Decisions Start with Awareness

So, here is a simple exercise I would love you to try.
Grab a piece of paper. Write down all the things you no longer serve you. Everything.
These might include:
- Habits
- Fears
- Excuses
- Relationships
- Self-doubt
- Cclutter
- Procrstination
- Old identity
Think of it as a decluttering exercise for your life, your mind. The list needs to include both external factors and internal factors because your future self may require a completely different mindset, environment and energy from the one you are currently holding on to.
Remember, making powerful decisions begins with honesty.
You Don’t Have To Do It Alone
You might make your list and know exactly what needs to change, but you don’t know how to move forward. That’s where coaching can be so valuable and transformative.
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) coaching helps you to understand the unconscious patterns, beliefs, and emotional blocks that keep repeating in your life. With NLP, you can finally make aligned, confident, and powerful decisions about your future. After all, life is too precious to spend years stuck in cycles that make you unhappy. We all deserve joy, fulfilment, and purpose in our lives. You deserve a life that feels good to wake up to.
So, now look at your list. What do you intend to end? Because the answer may lead you to some of the most powerful decisions you’ll ever make in life.
